Abstract
The study evaluated and compared the free radical scavenging potential of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and Beetroot (Beta vulgaris). The plant extracts were made in concentrations of 10µg/mL, 20µg/mL and 30µg/mL. The radical scavenging abilities were evaluated using Superoxide Scavenging (SOD) Assay, Hydroxyl Radical Scavenging (HRS) Assay and Reducing Power (RP) Assay. Beetroot extract had the highest values for SOD Scavenging ability (60, 30 and 15) × 107 µ/L at different concentrations. HRS values (42.45%, 21.74% and 19.08%) were highest in Turmeric extract. The extract of Beetroot-Turmeric combination showed higher values (3.05%, 2.30% and 1.87%) for Reducing Power Assay respectively. In conclusion, the results suggest that Turmeric and Beetroot in their natural form are rich sources of antioxidant and possess free radical scavenging activities even at a minimal concentration. ...
