Abstract
This research work x-rays the role of government in cooperative development (a case study of selected cooperative societies in Ahiazu Mbaise local government area, Imo State.  This was carried out to survey the past and present programmes and policy constituted by the government to improve, promote and as well encourage cooperatives for both rural and urban development.  The research work is carried out through the exploration of both the primary and secondary sources of information. Information is obtained from questionnaires, direct interview and other available records while the later were gotten from relevant textbooks and academic journals.  Data acquired were presented, interpreted and analyzed in tables.  Finally, the study uncovers those problems encountered by the government in developing cooperative. The problems are of financial constraints, corruption, and mismanagement etc.  But from the findings made the researcher is recommending the establishing of cooperative departments in various government ministries, promotion of cooperative education (federal and state college and institutions), economic assistance, financial assistance, infrastructural amenities, development programme etc to solve some of the problems encountered by the government towards cooperative development....
