Abstract
This project work was conducted to determine the incidence of prematurity among neonates in UITH, Ilorin, Kwara State. It informed the health officers of the incidence of prematurity among neonates in the hospital. Among the objectives is to determine the influence of maternal age in neonatal prematurity and to determine the influence of multiple gestations on prematurity. Furthermore, to determine the influence of baby’s gender on the incidence of prematurity. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research uses descriptive survey to sample patients related to the study in UITH, Ilorin, Kwara State. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, Data was collected from the records of children with preterm birth in the neonatal intensive care unit within October 2021– September 2022. In conclusion, recommendations were made that parents should ensure appropriate care of themselves and the fetus before and during pregnancy including nutritional adjustment, use of prescribed medication, prevention of malaria and other infections and the use of vitamin supplements and early marriage and early pregnancy should be minimized. Lastly, pregnant women should be health educated on the causes and preventions of premature labor/birth and early detection of those at risk should be done.
