Abstract
This research work titled women and economic development in Ebonyi State - A study of Catholic Women Organization in Izzi Local Government Area. The objectives that guide this study were to examine the extent to which provision of hair dressing and barbing equipment to indigent youths by CWO contributes to the economic development of Izzi local government area and evaluate the extent to which provision of soft loan by Catholic Women Organization contributes to economic empowerment of Izzi women. The study adopted the Empowerment Theory propounded by Julian Rappaport 1984. Also, the study adopted a descriptive research design. As quantitative research, it utilized primary and secondary sources of data. Data were collected using questionnaires administered to respondents. The population of the study was 50955 women drawn from five parishes in Izzi Local Government Area. Taro Yamani formula was used to get the sample size of 398 while the sampling technique adopted simple random sampling to guide the distribution of questionnaires. Chi-square was used for the testing of the three hypotheses that guided the study. The findings revealed that the provision of hair dressing and barbing equipment to indigent youths by CWO contributes to the economic development of Izzi Local Government Area provision of soft loans by CWO contributes to the economic empowerment of Izzi women. By implication increases the economic advancement of Izzi Local Government Area. Therefore, the following were recommended: Efforts should be made by the government to encourage and support CWO and other organization to create job opportunities to indigent youths by so doing and prevent them from idleness: More efforts should be made by the CWO to encourage and support women to practice mechanized farming in Izzi Local Government Area through grants of soft loan since it is an agrarian environment. ...
