Abstract
This study which examined the influence of radio programmes on the political awareness and participation of electorate in Imo State: A study of Hot Fm’s“The People’s Assembly”, aimed at finding out the extent to which electorate in Imo State are exposed to“The People’s Assembly” programme on Hot 99.5 Fm radio Owerri, and also to ascertain the level of knowledge which the electorate have acquired on political issues based on their exposure to the programme. Explanatory sequential mixed method was adopted for the study.  Questionnaires and interviews guide were used for data collection. The findings revealed that exposure of electorates in Imo State to“The People’s Assembly” programme on Hot 99.5 Fm radio is high at 50% the level of knowledge acquired by the electorates on political issues based on their listenership to“The People’s Assembly” programme is high at 71% and the extent“The People’s Assembly” programme has influenced the political participation of electorates in Imo State is high at 66.8%. The two hypotheses tested revealed that X2cal 16.97  X2 tab 5.995 which means that there is a significant political awareness and participation of electorates in Imo State as a result of their exposure to“The People’s Assembly” programme on Hot 99.5 Fm and X2 cal 55.11  X2 tab 5.991 indicated that the influence of“The People’s Assembly” programme on electorates in Imo State is significantly dependent on gender. Based on the findings, there is a need to encourage more radio stations in Imo State to design, package and present special enlightenment programmes on political issues this would result in a high level of political awareness and participation of the electorate in the democratic process....
