Abstract
This study was carried out to assess the effect of cultural practice on the nutritional status of children under five years of age in Unguwar Dabai area of Gwale local government Kano state. The objective of the study was to identify cultural practices affecting the nutritional status of children under five years of age, the effect of the cultural practice on the nutrition of under-five children, and to explore the measures of reducing cultural practices to the nutrition of under-five children in Unguwar Dabai area Gwale local government Kano state. A survey design was used for the study in Unguwar Dabai area of Gwale local government Kano state. A simple random sampling technique was used. The target population was unknown a sample size of 70 was determined using Cochran’s formula for the unknown population. A validated questionnaire with 5 point rating scale was used. Results were presented in Frequency table, percentage and mean. Findings revealed that cultural practice can affect child nutritional status with a grand mean score of 4.1, the effect of cultural practice on the nutrition of under five years children with a grand mean score of 3.8, and the ways of reducing cultural practice to the nutrition of children under five years of age with a grand mean score of 4.5 which are all greater than the criterion mean 3.00. It recommended that there should be renewed and sustained effort in educating the community on the effect of negative cultural practices and the importance of exclusive breastfeeding to the growth and development of children under five years of age....
