Abstract
Plant seeds have been used since antiquity as sources of vegetable oil. Examples of some plant seeds that have been conventionally exploited commercially for this purpose include soya beans, cotton seed, groundnuts, corn, palm seeds and sunflower. The main aim of this research work was to extract and characterize oil from mango seeds. The study area is Ogun state institute of Technology, Igbesa, Ado/Odo- Ota LGA, Ogun state, Nigeria. Mango fruist were purchased from Sango market in Ogun state in Nigeria. The seeds were first air-dried in the sun for three days and mechanically cracked using a nut cracker for the seeds to be taken out. Due to the abundance of Mangifera indica L. (mango) in virtually every part of Nigeria and considering its high consumption, this work was carried out to determine the potential applications of the waste seed kernel by investigating the physicochemical characteristics of its extracted oil content. The oil content was extracted using Soxhlet apparatus, and the physicochemical characterization was done using standard methods. The Mangifera indica L. seed kernel oil was observed to be light yellow in colour, solid at room temperature and has a pleasant odour when fresh and unpleasant when rancid. Mangifera indica L. seed kernel has a very low oil content of 2.5%, the oil contains unsaturated and saturated fatty acids. ...
