Abstract
This research work deals with the Design and Implementation of 3.5 kVA Solar Energy System for the Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Nigerian Defence Academy. The optimal tilt angle and orientation for the installation of the photovoltaic (PV) panels in the location under consideration were determined. This was achieved by varying the tilt angle from 3.1o to 37.2o at a succession of 3.1o between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm for a period of ten days. The equipment of the solar energy system were adequately sized using the required mathematical models. MATLAB software was comprehensively utilized in performing the various analyses. The optimal tilt angle and orientation for the PV panel after analysis for which optimum power harvest was attained, was found to be 24.8o and south respectively. Based on the load demand, a total battery capacity of 4235 Ah was obtained. Also, PV, charge controller and inverter ratings of 254.10 A, 10.51A and 3.85 kVA were also obtained respectively. The power output of a PV panel depends on the tilt angle, orientation and weather conditions. An accurate solar energy installation could lead to a lower power harvest which has a negative impact on the entire system. ...
