Abstract
This study conducts a pragmatic-semantic analysis of notices and announcements on the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) Notice Board. The research problem addressed concerns about the effectiveness of communication on the notice board in conveying intended messages to students. The aims and objectives include categorizing notice types, examining pragmatic and semantic aspects, and assessing overall effectiveness. The research employs a qualitative case study design, analyzing six selected notices through pragmatic-semantic lenses. Methods involve systematic data collection from the NSUK Notice Board, transcription of notices, and subsequent analysis of pragmatic markers, illocutionary acts, speech acts, and semantic features. Results indicate three main notice types: notices, announcements, and posters, each exhibiting clarity, conciseness, and strategic use of semantic elements. The study concludes that NSUK notices effectively communicate with students, attributing success to language precision and semantic richness. Recommendations include maintaining language clarity, incorporating visual elements, ensuring notice board accessibility, diversifying notice types, and conducting regular content reviews. Implementation of these recommendations is expected to enhance communication effectiveness within the NSUK environs. ...
