Abstract
Standard precautions are procedures designed to prevent healthcare workers from being exposed to potentially infected blood and body fluids by applying the fundamental principles of infection control through hand washing, utilization of masks, gowns, and safe injection practices. This study was on knowledge and practice of standard precaution among nurses in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi. It was a descriptive study with the following objectives to assess the level of knowledge of standard precaution among nurses in NAUTH, to explore the action taken by the nurses when they are exposed. A sample of 150 nurses was used for the study. Questionnaire was the instrument of data collection and the return rate was 100%. Data was analyzed and presented in tables. Finding revealed that 100% have heard about standard precautions, 100%indicated HIV as one of the diseases transmitted by needle stick injury,99% indicated hepatitis B virus while 97% of the nurses indicated hepatitis C . 100% of the respondents indicated that they do not recap needles after use and 100% also indicated that they do not reuse syringe. The researcher recommended that provision for supervision of health care worker with attitude considered practice for non-compliance should be made. The researcher suggests that a similar study should be carried out in other hospitals so that generalizations would be made. Keywords: standard precautions, knowledge, practice, infection control....
