Abstract
Effective communication is essential for cooperative relationships in healthcare settings. This study examined barriers to effective communication among health information managers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital. Fifty-three health information managers participated. A descriptive quantitative research design was used with a self-administered questionnaire. Key findings showed that 95% of participants encountered communication barriers including judgmental speech, defensiveness to feedback, and improper uses of authority. These hindered openness among staff. Furthermore, 85% identified knowledge gaps, unfriendly leadership tendencies, misunderstandings, and language barriers as contributors.  The hypothesis that no significant barriers to effective communication exist among the sample was rejected, with the analysis indicating significant issues impeding effectiveness.  Recommendations include implementing communication skills training for health information managers to facilitate meaningful connections with patients and coworkers. Additionally, addressing knowledge gaps, cultivating approachable leadership, and increasing cultural awareness would aid communication. Further studies into the impact of improved training and a more supportive institutional communication climate on patient care and outcomes could be beneficial. Overall, this highlights major communication barriers for an essential healthcare role and the need for multifaceted strategies targeting individual competencies and organizational culture to remedy impediments....
