In Nigeria, it accounts for approximately 40% of all female cancers. Breast cancer can manifest in various ways, including mammographic abnormalities, painless breast lumps, skin changes, ulceration, and symptoms of metastasis to organs like the lungs, liver, brain, and bones in advanced cases. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to assess the sociodemographic characteristics, patterns of presentation, and treatment outcomes of breast cancer among female patients in tertiary health institutions in Anambra State, Nigeria, over a five-year period. The study included 178 female breast cancer patients who had received at least four courses of chemotherapy and follow-up visits.b The results showed a mean age of 48.5±12.2 years, with most patients between 36-45 years old. The majority (90.2%) were literate with at least a primary education, and 87.2% were married. The most common presenting complaint was a breast lump (96.5%), followed by ulceration (15.6%), nipple retraction (13.9%), and symptoms of metastasis (6.9%). Most patients (49.7%) had cancer in the right breast, while 46.2% had it in the left breast, and 4.1% had bilateral breast cancer. Alarmingly, 32% of patients presented at least one year after symptom onset, with 29.5% presenting with stage III disease and 19.1% with stage IV. The most common histological type was invasive ductal carcinoma (85.5%). Treatment outcomes were poor, with 44.5% lost to follow-up, 25.4% deceased, and only 19.1% alive with the disease.
