Abstract
Quackery and the presence of untrained personnel in healthcare settings pose serious threats to patient care if left unchecked. This study defined quacks as individuals dishonestly claiming specialized medical knowledge and skills they do not possess, fraudulently or ignorantly pretending expertise. The research aimed to investigate the influence of quackery and inadequate manpower training on Health Information Management (HIM) practices. A descriptive survey method was employed, targeting staff from the HIM Department at NAUTH Nnewi. With a population of 122, a sample size of 93 was determined using Taro Yamane''''s formula. Data collection utilized a validated questionnaire, and analysis involved simple percentages and chi-square testing. Findings revealed 98% of respondents were aware of quackery and untrained personnel in HIM practices. 88% agreed it leads to a negative professional image, while 79% acknowledged its detrimental impact on the profession''s value and growth. Lack of skill training and development was cited as a primary cause by 83% of respondents, posing risks not only to patients but also to healthcare providers, hospitals, and communities. Ensuring authentic credentials of HIM personnel was proposed as a solution by 79% of respondents. Hypothesis testing indicated a significant relationship between quackery, manpower training, and HIM practices, with a calculated chi-square value of 6.491 and a tabulated value of 5.991 at a 0.05 significance level. The study recommended measures such as enforcing registration and regulation of health facilities, ensuring compliance with guiding laws, and ascertaining the appropriateness of medical equipment and instruments to eliminate quackery and untrained manpower in HIM practices....
