Abstract
The essence of a business relationship is mutual trust with the expectation of gain from the exchange. Actually, it is very hard to envision business transactions without the mechanism of credit. It provides the lubricant and the slack necessary for the continuity of transactions regardless of the immediate availability of cash. Thus, the granting of credit is the rule, not the exception. The problem is not whether to the extent it but rather how much to grant, to whom and under what condition. Default in credit has been a constant source of discouragement to the organizations that give out credit to their customers hence the need for effective credit management. This project was aimed at credit in the banking industry, a comparative analysis of union bank and UBA plc. The essence was to see if the similarities and even dissimilarities in the method in which the different banks manage their credits, how credits are processed and also to see how the blanks can learn from each other. The methodology adopted for the study was the use of questionnaires to obtain primary data. Secondary data were also obtained from books. Periodicals such as the central bank of Nigeria monetary and prudential guidelines, government gazettes and several other libraries. The data were analyzed using simple percentage. The findings of the research project revealed that the method used by the different banks is different as the kinds of credit they give are also different thought related. Recommendations are made to improve the credit management in different banks in a bid to improve customers patronage to meet both present and future challenges. The task of carrying out the research has been very stimulating but its real value will be seen in the application of the result to the banking industry. ...
