Abstract
This research work was carried out to assess the Knowledge and Perception of Patients attending Ophthalmic Clinic on glaucoma treatment adherence in University Of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin Kwara State. The researcher described the background of the study, statement of the problem which talks about why the rate of blindness which was a complication of glaucoma was common among patients attending Ophthalmic Clinic in University of Ilorin, four research questions were formulated. Relevant and reliable literatures were consulted on the subject matter and a well self structured questionnaire was used to collect data from respondents. Descriptive research design was adopted for this research and the research setting was in the Ophthalmic Clinic of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Patients were the target population used for this study and a sample size of 80 was calculated using the Fischer formula. Ethical approval was collected from ethical review committee of the hospital to carry on with the research. 80 questionnaires were distributed to the patients using the simple random sampling technique and the questionnaires were retrieved. Data analysis was done using SPSS and presented using frequency tables, figures and bar charts. Four research questions were asked and the outcome was that the patients attending Ophthalmic Clinic at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital have good knowledge and positive perception towards glaucoma treatment adherence. Based on the findings, it was recommended that measures should be put in place by hospitals and healthcare providers to ensure adequate information on glaucoma treatment and complications of not adhering to prescribed glaucoma treatment.
