Abstract
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency lifesaving procedure that is performed when the heart stops beating and it is often used on people in cardiac arrest to oxygenate the blood and maintain a cardiac output to keep vital organs alive. This study was conducted to assess the factors influencing the knowledge and practice of nurses working in the emergency unit of the University of Delta Teaching Hospital. This study was carried out with a descriptive method of data analysis with 69 respondents using a structured questionnaire which solicited information about their socio-demographic characteristics, level of knowledge of nurses about cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the practice of nurses towards cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and factors that hinder the practice of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Findings from the study show that 59.4% of the nurses first heard about cardiopulmonary resuscitation from nursing school, 82.6% of the nurses have performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and 73.9% said lack of harmonious team relationships affects the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The practice of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in emergency units is a critical component of healthcare and of great importance in resuscitating patients in cardiac arrest back to life. The findings from this study conducted at the University of Delta Teaching Hospital provided comprehensive information on the current state of the level of knowledge of nurses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the rate of practice. There’s a need to provide time-to-time training and updates on the latest step and approach to cardiopulmonary resuscitation by in-service continuing education. Furthermore, nurses in the emergency department of UNIDELTH Delta state require a health behavior change which should be based on a rational approval of the balance between barrier to and benefits of action....
