Abstract
In our rapidly evolving digital age, smartphones have become ubiquitous, seamlessly woven into the fabric of our daily lives. These compact devices offer unparalleled convenience and connectivity, enabling us to stay in touch, access information, and even work on the go. However, this convenience comes with a caveat. The study evaluated the awareness and impact of smartphone use on vision among 50 student nurses across different arms of classes in College of Nursing, University of Delta Teaching Hospital, Delta State, using a self-structured electronic questionnaire which was administered and findings were later retrieved for sorting and analysis using barchart, histogram and hypothesis was tested using chi-square statistics. Findings from the research shed light on the habits and perceptions of student nurses concerning smartphone use and its impact on ocular health. A notable percentage of respondents (62%) frequently used smartphones during their daily activities, especially during study or work hours and just before bedtime. The study revealed a strong consensus among respondents regarding the potential risks associated with frequent smartphone use, such as eye fatigue, dry eyes, blurred vision, and eye strain. Despite the concerns raised, the chi-square analysis suggested that there is no significant relationship between frequent smartphone use and visual performance among student nurses. This challenges the common assumption that smartphone use directly correlates with vision problems. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of understanding the potential impact of smartphone use on ocular health. While concerns about eye strain and related symptoms are prevalent, the findings suggest that a direct link between frequent smartphone use and visual performance among student nurses may not be as significant as previously thought. This calls for a more nuanced approach to addressing smartphone-related vision issues and promoting responsible smartphone usage. Keywords: Awareness, impact, smartphone, vision, student nurses...
