Abstract
Health seeking behavior refers to the actions taken by individuals to address their health concerns or seek medical care. This research study was a descriptive survey carried out to assess factors influencing health-seeking behavior among clients/patients at the Opthalmology clinic, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State. The objectives of the study were to identify the factors influencing health-seeking behavior among clients/patients, to identify the socioeconomic factors that influence health-seeking behavior among clients/patients, and to assess the barriers preventing clients/patients from seeking early medical care for ophthalmic diseases. 50 respondents were used for the research. The information from the research was manually analyzed and presented using frequency tables and bar charts. Hypotheses were tested using chi-square at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis revealed that 44% strongly agreed that patients are more likely to seek medical attention if they perceive their eye problem as serious or life-threatening, and 58% strongly agreed that low income and unemployment can limit access to healthcare services due to financial constraints, and 56% strongly agreed that lack of health insurance for healthcare services can be a significant deterrent for patients, especially those with limited financial resources. In conclusion, it was recommended that health-seeking behaviors should be expanded to capture the knowledge, attitude and beliefs regarding the various options of care available, the government should subsidize health care for patients to encourage seeking eye medical care and healthcare providers should communicate effectively with patients, using plain language and avoiding medical jargon.
