A 5 years retrospective study on the incidence of head injury in accident and emergency unit in UITH, Ilorin, Kwara state

Abstract
This is a descriptive research into the incidence of head injury and its outcome as recorded in the Accident and Emergency Units, at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin from January 2018 to December 2022. Relevant literatures were consulted on the subject matter and a checklist consisting of variables such as age, sex, occupation, and educational status was used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed and presented in simple frequency, tables figures and charts. Based on the research questions, the findings showed that the highest incidence of head injury was in 2022 with 170 (28.0%) followed by 2020 with 144 (23.7%) and the lowest was in 2019 with 72 (11.8%). The research hypotheses revealed that there is a significant relationship between the age of clients, occupation type and the incidence of head injury. In the monthly distribution, the highest was in August, 78 (12.9%) and lowest was in March, 21 (5.1%). The age group mostly affected was 1-10 years. In view of the findings recommendations such as parents should not leave under aged individuals unattended to and appropriate laws should be enacted to enforce wearing of seat belts in vehicles and motorcycles to use well fitting helmets. In conclusion, appropriate preventive measures will help to reduce the frequency of head injuries in our community....
