Assessing the compliance of health workers towards universal safety precaution at university of Ilorin teaching hospital, Ilorin

Abstract
Compliance with universal safety precautions should be encouraged among health workers in our world today. Universal safety precaution refers to the practice of avoiding contact with patients’ bodily fluids by use of wearing nonporous articles such as medical/surgical gloves, goggles and face shields. The objective of this study is to assess the compliance of health workers towards universal safety precautions at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State. Findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on universal safety precautions in Nigeria and will also assist in improving the understanding and compliance with safety precautions. A quantitative research design using a descriptive method and 90 respondents were chosen using a convenient sampling technique and a self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Validity and reliability of the instrument was ascertained before administering it to the respondents. SPSS(version 26) was used for data analysis with descriptive statistical devices frequency table and percentage. Data was presented in tables.  care workers and patients, 85.4% know that there are different PPE for different procedures. Findings also revealed that the health workers always wash their hands when coming in contact with different patients (88.8%), always wash their hands after taking off the gloves (73%), always wash their hands immediately after contacting any blood, body fluid, secretion, excretion and dirty substances (91%), the factors identified are lack of access to supplies, shortage of PPE supplies, lack of knowledge and education on the use, poor workspace, and lack of access to supplies. In conclusion, health workers are expected and advised to always use appropriate safety precautions to prevent dangers associated with splash, needle pricks and the like which can endanger the lives of health workers....
