Perceived effects of depression on academic performance of students at Cherubim and Seraphim secondary school Sabo-oke, Ilorin, Kwara state

Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder. It involves a depressed mood or loss of pleasure or interest in activities one once enjoyed for long periods of time. It is defined as a mental health disorder characterized by persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness and loss of interest in activities that was once enjoyed. The objective of this study is to identify the perceived effects of depression on the academic performance of the students of Cherubim and Seraphim Secondary School. A descriptive research design was used and 98 respondents were chosen using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique and a self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Validity and reliability of the instrument were as certain before administering it to the respondents. SPSS (version 22) was used for data analysis with descriptive statistical devices frequency table and percentage. Data was presented in tables. Findings reveal that the majority 46(46.9%) of the respondents acclaimed that their academic performance is a result of depressive thoughts and 52(53.1%) of the respondents thought otherwise and rejected their academic performance is not affected by depression and with a mean score of 1.53.  In conclusion, it is important to address symptoms of depression, absenteeism, and thoughts of dropping out to ensure students'' mental well-being and academic success....
