Abstract
This research focuses on the knowledge and attitude of mothers on childhood growth and development in Yagba East, Kogi State. Mothers plays an important role in the child's nurturing and in assessing the child's development on observations by identifying their appropriate developmental milestone. Evidence suggests that mothers with former education and nutritional knowledge play an important role in increasing the physical growth and cognitive development of under-five children. This study aims to determine if the mother's educational level, socioeconomic status, socio-cultural factors, location and maternal age can influence the mother's knowledge and attitude towards childhood nutrition and childhood growth and development in Yagba East Local government. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 92 mothers of under-five children living in Yagba East, Kogi State. Participants were administered self-structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to measure the frequency, tables, percentages and charts. Chi-square test was used to compare the association between variables. The results of the study showed that more than two-thirds of the mothers have good and fair knowledge of the impact of nutrition on childhood growth and development. More educated mothers tend to have access to information regarding childhood growth and development, and there exists a significant relationship between maternal age, parity and maternal knowledge of childhood nutrition.
