Abstract
VOC is a debilitating complication of SCD, and effective prevention strategies are crucial for improving the quality of life for affected children. This study investigates the knowledge and practices of mothers in preventing vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) among children with sickle cell disease (SCD)in General Hospital, Idah. The study also aims to assess the level of maternal understanding regarding the causes and prevention of VOC, as well as the extent to which this knowledge translates into practical preventive measures. Cross-sectional non-experimental descriptive research survey was used and the target population is mothers with children between the ages of 2 and 17 years with vaso-occlusive crisis.  Preliminary findings indicate a varying range of knowledge levels among mothers with 64.8% having good knowledge and practices towards vaso-occlusive crisis while others exhibit gaps in their awareness. The method employed reveals a diversity of preventive practices adopted by mothers, including adherence to medication regimens, monitoring of hydration, and lifestyle modifications. Furthermore, the study identifies a positive correlation between maternal knowledge and the implementation of preventive measures. Mothers with a higher level of understanding tend to engage in more consistent and effective preventive practices. The study suggests the importance of targeted educational interventions to bridge knowledge gaps among mothers and promote the consistent implementation of preventive measures. By addressing these factors, nurses and policymakers can contribute to a significant reduction in the incidence and severity of VOC in children with SCD through health education on genetic counseling and many more. This research contributes valuable insights into the complex dynamics surrounding VOC prevention and provides the basis for developing interventions that empower mothers and enhance the well-being of children affected by SCD....
