Abstract
Early initiation of breastfeeding is the introduction of breast milk immediately after birth. The broad objective of this study is to assess the factors influencing early initiation of breastfeeding among mothers in the postnatal ward at General Hospital Idah.  This study aims to identify the factors influencing early initiation of breastfeeding among mothers at the post-natal ward of General Hospital Idah Kogi State, and also, to identify the facilitators and barriers influencing early initiation of breastfeeding among postnatal mothers at General Hospital Idah. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used and the sample size was determined using Taro Yamane''s formula in which 133 respondents were selected. The research instrument used was a self-developed structured questionnaire. Data was presented in the form of tables and bar charts. Analysis was done by an analyst using inferential statistics SPSS. Findings from this study revealed that there is no significant relationship between the health of mothers and the initiation of breastfeeding among postnatal mothers at General Hospital Idah. Since the P-value (0.954) is greater than 0.05, the null hypothesis will not be rejected. Also, for the alternate hypothesis, since the P-value (0.894) is greater than 0.05, the null hypothesis will not be rejected. Therefore, there is no significant relationship between the mode of delivery of the child and the initiation of breastfeeding in General Hospital Idah. In conclusion, this study has shown that there is a need for nurses and even midwives to be deliberate in educating nursing mothers, especially primigravida about the importance of early initiation of breastfeeding. It is recommended that nurses should not try to force their ways on the patients, but rather influence their decision-making by making them see reasons to follow medical prescriptions....
