Abstract
The aim of this study is to develop a queuing system that will help Federal Medical Centre, Owerri reduce the waiting time of customers and improve service delivery. The data used in this study were collected from a primary source. The data are made up of arrival time, time service started, time service ended, using observation method for five (5) working days between the hours of 10.00 am and 2.00pm).To ensure the accuracy of the data, a watch, calculator and writing materials were used by the observers to document, with careful observation, the queuing behavior displayed at the hospital. The data were analyzed using Queuing Theory. The study employed a single channel and multi-channel queuing models in the analysis. The study revealed that the waiting time and queue length is lower using multi-server. However, employing single-server, the waiting time increases and queue length increases. It is more efficient to use multi-server to attend to customers during working days. However, since the expected cost of waiting in multi-server is lower than the expected cost of waiting in single-server, and since the utilization factor in multi-server is less than one compared to the single–server which means that work brought to the system per unit time is strictly smaller than the processing rate, it clearly indicates that as soon as the customer enters the multi-server system she is being served. The management should always keep an adequate number of doctors on standby in case of emergency. Finally, the management should also advise the customers to observe the queuing discipline of first-come, first-serve to ensure fair play....
