In this light, the researcher’s main objective concerning this research work was to emphasize on how poverty can be alleviated and encourage economic development. These research the past response of the government to poverty, their failure, their successes and recommended possible alternative measure. Imo state as a whole was handled in this project. The research gave a brief discussion of the situation in Imo State in chapter 1, while chapter 2 discussed chapter 1 in detailed, but with adequate literature, chapter’s of this project work dealt with the collection of data with various instrument, chapter 4 of this work analyzed the data and chapter 5 summarized the analysis and offered suggestions.
