Abstract
The study was intended to investigate the level of awareness of determinants of sexual abuse and supportive care amongst female nursing students of Madonna University, Rivers state. The target population was the female nursing students in Madonna University. This study employed quantitative methods of data collection. The data was collected through field work using a self-designed questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS and later presented in frequency tables for interpretation. Finding from the study indicates that the major category of sexual abuse which was prevalent in the area was the interfamilial sexual abuse, where individuals were sexually abused by close relatives, the male perpetrators and the girl child were found to be the most victims of the vice 80% of the respondents were aware of father-daughter sexual abuse,98% for father-son,19% for mother-son, 19% for sibling-incest,83% on rape,66% on sodomy, 16% on incest and 19% on pedophilia respectively. The findings also indicate that child sexual abuse took many forms in the community vaginal penetration, cuddling, prolonged kissing and mutual masturbations. Among them, the most prevalent was the vaginal penetration which was accompanied by physical injury on the victim’s life. The identified effects included stigmatization (74.5%), loss of worth (53.6%), change in behavioral patterns (69.1%), intellectual deficits (66.5%), hampers the development of life skills and self-discipline (71%), concentration problems (65.5%), depression and anxiety (73.6%), suicide attempts (59.1%), sexual promiscuity (86.5%), sudden mood swings: rage, fear, insecurity, or withdrawal (84%), fear of intimacy or closeness (53.6%), and drug and alcohol abuse (78.1%). The study recommends the implementation of more strategies to protect victims since sexual abuse was against the right of the girl-child and any individual....
