Various strategies have been adopted by the Nigerian Government in promoting cooperative societies in the country to facilitate the economic development process. Cooperative financing strategies are very good at promoting sustainable development and fully utilized the potentials of cooperative societies in this regard. Cooperative society is often regarded as one of the microfinance institutions (MFIs) that promote entrepreneurship and rapid industrialization. However, cooperative societies of today suffer a lot of setbacks in performing their economic functions. This research work examined the potentials of cooperative societies as well as exposed the various factors militating against its development. It investigated the problems militating against its performance, which calls for its total re-engineering. This would make for a better economic role that promotes growth and development especially in cooperatives finance.
