Abstract
This project took a critical look at the role of non-governmental organizations on the development of rural areas (a case study of Abasi Local government Area). Development of the rural areas has been a constant issue in Nigeria’s recent economic and political history.  In order to bring this into reality, there is the need to evolve a system that would activate the participation and support of the rural people. Data was collected using primary and secondary techniques and questionnaires were administered to a population size comprising of different organizations in the local government. A total of one hundred (150) questionnaires were distributed to the respondents. The researcher employed the sample random sampling techniques in choosing the organizations. With stratified random sampling, ten respondents were selected from each of the organizations. From the data collected and analyzed, it was discovered that the government does not suitably motivate the non-governmental organization to participate in rural development. Non-governmental organizations are also not usually brought into partnership with the government for the execution projects in these rural areas. After detailed deliberations on some of the problems encountered, one of the recommendations suggested is that the government should endeavor to provide rural areas with the basic amenities so that non-governmental organizations will have an enabling environment to operate in....
