This might be due to the fact that the intellectual competence of the teacher is a primary asset in the quality of learning the students acquire in schools. A Biology teacher competent in his work, possessing the qualities which enable him to inspire and develop the latent capacities of his students would automatically contribute immensely to the high academic performance of the students in chemistry. Also, teachers’ competence in terms of resourcefulness, effective teaching skills and good evaluation enhance students’ performance. This is in line with the finding of (Ivowi, 2016) that there is a significant relationship between teachers’ competence and students' performance. This is also in agreement with the findings of (Inyang, 2017), that teaching is effective when the teacher makes use of instructional materials. The results also showed that there is a significant difference between the performance of biology students taught by qualified teachers and those taught by unqualified teachers. This might be due to the fact that a qualified teacher can translate knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in accordance with certain professional principles. A qualified teacher has a good classroom control, effective communication skills, adequate knowledge of the subject and can utilize varieties of teaching strategies in order to enhance students' performance. (This is in line with the work of (James, 2011) that all teachers need breadth and depth in the subject they will teach, including the understanding of the new knowledge and this calls for high professional qualification). ...Preview Download Preview +Other Education project topics and materials you might be interested in»Strategies for improving low academic performance in English language in secondary schools»The effect of continuous assessment on academic performance of students in school (a case study of Okitipupa local government area of Ondo state)»Influence of social media on the performance of secondary school students as perceived by teachers»The effect of overpopulation on the academic performance of students - a case study of Uselu secondary school, Benin City»The use of extensive reading in promoting communication competence in secondary school»Evaluating the causes, effects and solutions to cultism in Nigeria's tertiary institutions»Effect of drill and practice on the academic achievement of students in English language in junior secondary schools»The problems of primary school education in Kano State»Factors affecting the effective implementation of continuous assessment in Oredo local government area of Edo state»Factors affecting the implementation of universal basic education in some selected primary schools»Effect of school environment on the academic performance of primary school students»Factors associated with the mass failure of students in integrated science in secondary schools»Cultism in Nigeria's tertiary institutions - a case study of Lagos state university»Efficacy of mastery learning on retention and performance in identified threshold concepts in chemistry among secondary school students in Kano municipal, Nigeria»Impact of principal’s leadership style on students’ academic performance in some selected secondary schools of Gwale local government area, Kano state
