This indicates that the teacher: student ratio is very high in the majority of the public schools and was a major factor affecting performance. Other major factors that hindered the students’ performance were lack of teaching and learning resources such as books and lack of adequate facilities such as classrooms and desks. The TPR in public schools of 60:1 is very high as compared to the standard set by the United Nations for good quality of education of 40:1 (UNESCO, 2005). The study established that there is a lack of physical infrastructure in terms of classrooms that was important in defining the conduciveness of the learning environment where poor infrastructure hindered the students’ performance. The study established that there were separate latrines for boys and girls in their schools. Therefore the majority of the schools had a functional hygiene and sanitation system for both genders. This catered for the special needs of each gender as boys and girls had separate toilets to use. However, the ratio of the latrines for the boys/girls to the number of boys/girls in the school was 1: 25. The ratio of the latrines for both genders was very high and therefore the hygiene and sanitation facilities were not adequate. The high ratio only served to worsen the cleanliness of the toilets rendering the school environment non-conducive as the students faced challenges accessing the toilet facilities. ...Preview Download Preview +Other Education project topics and materials you might be interested in»Strategies for improving low academic performance in English language in secondary schools»The effect of continuous assessment on academic performance of students in school (a case study of Okitipupa local government area of Ondo state)»Influence of social media on the performance of secondary school students as perceived by teachers»The effect of overpopulation on the academic performance of students - a case study of Uselu secondary school, Benin City»The use of extensive reading in promoting communication competence in secondary school»Effect of drill and practice on the academic achievement of students in English language in junior secondary schools»Evaluating the causes, effects and solutions to cultism in Nigeria's tertiary institutions»The problems of primary school education in Kano State»Factors affecting the effective implementation of continuous assessment in Oredo local government area of Edo state»Effect of school environment on the academic performance of primary school students»Factors associated with the mass failure of students in integrated science in secondary schools»Factors affecting the implementation of universal basic education in some selected primary schools»Cultism in Nigeria's tertiary institutions - a case study of Lagos state university»Efficacy of mastery learning on retention and performance in identified threshold concepts in chemistry among secondary school students in Kano municipal, Nigeria»Impact of principal’s leadership style on students’ academic performance in some selected secondary schools of Gwale local government area, Kano state
