Hence, this study aimed at examining how poverty has contributed to poor health care utilization in State Specialist Hospital Ikare Akoko, Ondo State. The research design employed in this study was descriptive survey design. Simple random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and twenty (120) respondents. A total of one hundred and three (103) questionnaires were analysed for the study at a response rate of 85.8%. The data was analyzed and presented in frequencies and simple percentage for qualitative variables. The result showed that most of the respondents 54(52.4%) were females while the majority 55(53.4%) were single. Many of them were traders. The study showed that the majority 53(51.5%) of the respondents earn an average of #15,000 per month. Many of the respondents 79(76.7%) were not on NHIS and 78(75.7%) of the respondents agreed that the cost of treatment in the hospital was high. The result revealed that poverty denies people access to reliable health care services 67(65.0%) while 49(47.6%) agreed that lack of NHIS can contribute to poor health care utilization. Concerning possible solutions to poor health care utilization: 49(47.6%) of the respondents agreed that NHIS can increase health care utilization, while 49(47.6%) agreed that creating awareness on the benefits of health care utilization can reduce the level of poor health care utilization. The study concluded that there should be an increase in the involvement of NHIS by people to reduce the cost of health care services.
