Abstract
This research project deals with the effects of overcrowding on housing qualities in Akwakuma in Owerri North L.G.A. of Imo state. Housing is one amongst the fundamental basic needs of man every man needs a place he can call home. Housing in general refers to the social problem of ensuring that member of society have a home in which to live whether a house or dwelling, lodging or shelter. A place of relaxation and rest after the day’s activities. In this research work various sources of data collection were adopted e.g. primary and secondary sources of data collection. In this research project various sampling techniques were discussed such as cluster sampling, stratified random sampling technique was used in this research work for the twelve (12) streets in Akwakuma (study area). Sample size was approximately 400, and the statistical too in testing the hypothesis in this research project was“chi-square”. The results of the hypothesis in this research are t-calculated 2.49 while t-tabulated  7.96 and it was recorded that since t-tabulated is greater than t-calculated, we reject HO and accept HI which states that urban expansion and substandard building materials are factors causing overcrowding on housing qualities in the study. In conclusion, the beauty, security, privacy and comfort of a house are lost when the total number of persons recommended for a house exceeds the available number of qualifies and facilities/services in a house or even an area. These are problems and they have to be resolved. ...
