Abstract
Obesity is an abnormal accumulation of fat in the adipose tissue throughout the body. It is the most common nutritional disorder in infants, children and adults in affluent societies. Obesity has been associated with several non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and lipid disorders as well as with increased morbidity and mortality among adults. The most commonly used scale that healthcare providers use to diagnose obesity is called the body mass index. BMI has been suggested as an ideal measure of adiposity since it is easy to measure and is closely associated with obesity-related health risks. BMI takes into consideration the body’s overall fat content, expressed by using a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of one’s height (in meters).A normal BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9 (kilograms of weight per squared meter of height). The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of obesity among Emirates College Students in Emirates College of Health Sciences and Technology Kano state. Two research questions were formulated to guide the research work. This study is expected to be of great importance to the students identified with Obesity/ overweight, it will help in the early identification of problems in the school (Emirates College of Health sciences and Technology) so that early management will be initiated to prevent complications. Related literatures were properly reviewed. A cross-sectional study was conducted, the simple random sampling technique was adopted to sample 90 respondents/participants who participated in the obesity test (BMI). Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, Frequency table was used to analyze the demographic characteristics of the respondents, the proportion of Body Mass Index (BMI), and the distribution of study subjects based on Body Mass Index (BMI) categories and gender....
