Abstract
This research study“Electronic Health Record a Panacea to Effective Health Information Management focuses mainly on the current challenges facing staff of Health Information managers on the use of electronic health records, benefits and implementation processes. The objective of this study is to create an overview of the existing challenges and implementation of electronic health records in hospitals and to identify problems or challenges facing staff of health information management in using electronic health records, such as funding, procurement of computer hardware, confidentiality issues and training of staff of health information managers in using electronic health records. Descriptive research design was used to collect data from staff of health information management. The researcher however considered simple random sampling with a population of 60 respondents from where the sample size was drawn to be 50 staff. Questionnaire was used as an instrument and data generated through the said primary source (i.e. Questionnaire) and secondary source, as well as, the hypothesis were all analyzed and tested using simple percentage. Research findings were thus made and recommendations were provided as possible solutions to the challenges faced by health record. The research exercise concluded that electronic health records should be implemented in all tertiary hospitals to ensure accurate health record keeping and statistics, government through the Federal Ministry of Health and Hospital Management Board should provide a good set of computers and computer peripherals/hardware. Training and re-training of staff should also be provided to staff of Health Information Managers and above all health information managers should make sure that they participate in electronic health records training, seminars, or workshop to adapt to new technologies and the latest development in the use of electronic health records as directed by the hospital management Board...
