Abstract
This work is on ethnic and socio–political dimensions of national security challenges using Kogi State as case study. The major objective of this project is to examine the relationship between ethnic and socio-political factors and insecurity in Nigeria and to evaluate how Nigeria surmounts the challenges of ethnic and socio-political agitation. . The methodology adopted in gathering data was descriptive method, both the primary and secondary methods. The major instrument used to gather data from primary source is the questionnaire. From a population of 4,500,000 sample size of 400 respondents was selected using simple random technique. Findings revealed that ethnic crises and socio-political struggles can hinder people from going about their means of livelihood to earn their daily living. Ethnic and socio-political crises can lead to violence in the state, destruction of public properties and facilities, disturbed the peace and unity of the state and country.  In view of the findings, it was recommended that fairness and justice should not just be said to be done but must be seen to be done. In other words, fairness and justice should be experiential, practical and in reality, when this is the case, citizens automatically assume the responsibility of ensuring their security and those of others. Special and additional attention and support should be given to the security department of the country, not only at the federal level but also at the state and local government levels. This will go a long way in giving sub-nationals/the other levels of government some necessary power and resource needed to engage, confront and fight against the various security challenges peculiar to these various levels. ...
