Otitis externa is an infection of the outer ear canal that runs from the eardrum to the outside of the head. It's often caused by water remaining in the ear after swimming. This creates a moist environment that helps bacteria or fungi grow. The main symptom is redness in the outer ear accompanied by warmth and pain. A person may be prescribed ear drops and advised to keep the ear dry.Usually only one ear is affected. With treatment, these symptoms should clear up within a few days. However, some cases can persist for several months or longer.
