Abstract
The research was carried out to determine the spectroscopic and phytochemical evaluation of methanolic extract of mahogany tree gum for possible biosynthetic process. The research was carried out at the department of chemistry, Joseph Sarwuan Tarkka university makurdi. Mahogany tree gum was collected from mahogany trees within the university campus. Extraction of mahogany tree gum extract was done using methanol extraction method. Phytochemical screening was carried out on the extract to evaluate the presence of essential phytochmicals in the extract. The extract were also subjected to UV analysis and FTIR analysis using UV-visible spectroscopy and FTIR Fourier transformed infra-red respectively to determine the presence of magnesium oxide and functional groups in the extract. The results showed that phytochemicals such flavonoids, alkaloids, phlobatannins and tannins were present. The FTIR Spectra in this research showed medium absorption band at 3403.47 and N-H functional group. Strong absorption for O-H functional group at 2924.18 band was observed and medium intensity for C-H stretching frequencies of 2852.81 and O-H band appeared at 2347.43 frequencies and it shows a strong Intensity. The research concluded that mahogany tree gum can be used as good sources functional group and can be used as source medicinal products since it contain phytochemical like flavonoids, alkaloid and tannins, it is also recommended that more research should be carried out to determine the application of this functional grouped and phytochmical in the different areas of human endeavours....
