Abstract
This project work assesses the knowledge and attitude of health care professionals towards patients' right to privacy in Lagos University Teaching Hospital. It informed the health officers on the understanding of healthcare professionals on the rights of patients when it comes to privacy in the hospital. Among the objectives was to assess the knowledge and level of awareness about patients' right to privacy and confidentiality among health care professionals and to experiment with the attitude and perception of health care professionals towards patients right to privacy and confidentiality of patient health records. Furthermore, to find out if health care professionals observe and uphold patients' rights to privacy and confidentiality when performing their day-to-day activities. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research uses descriptive survey to sample staff of Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 124 questionnaires were distributed out of which 122 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that restrictions should be placed on the practice of posting health information on health information networks, each hospital should have a clear policy on reporting of patients' information, and physician’s cubicles/consulting rooms should be privacy oriented. Lastly, access to patients’ health information database should be restricted to authorized users alone and access level protocols implemented and pin codes instituted.
