Abstract
This project work assesses the attitude of healthcare providers toward mentally-ill patients of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. It informed the health officers on the understanding of healthcare professionals regarding the rights of mentally-ill patients in the hospital. Among the objectives was to assess To assess the perception of healthcare providers towards mental illness and to investigate the level of communication between healthcare providers and mentally- ill patients. Furthermore, to find out the level of care from healthcare providers to mentally ill patients. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research uses descriptive survey to sample staff of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 184 questionnaires were distributed out of which 86 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that healthcare providers have a positive attitude toward mental illness. However, the positive attitude by the providers should be sustained. The findings revealed that the level of communication between healthcare providers and patients is high. Hence, effective communication between the care providers and patients should be sustained. And lastly, the study also revealed that the level of care from the healthcare providers to the patients is moderate.
