Abstract
This research work was conducted to determine the factors that influence home-based pain management practices of parents with sickle cell children in UITH. It informed the health officers of the understanding of parents regards home-based pain management of children with sickle cell in the hospital. Among the objectives was to determine the knowledge of parents on the use of complementary and alternative medicine as home-based pain management practice and to determine the type of complementary and alternative medicine practice by parents with sickle cell children. Furthermore, to evaluate how parents' educational level can influence home-based pain management. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research uses descriptive survey to sample parents attending University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 50 questionnaires were distributed out of which 50 were also retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that parents should be more inquisitive about their child's disease and various treatment strategies to manage the disease and also parents should be willing to contribute to the child's health and do all it takes to minimize crisis. While, the government should also support in organizing seminars, and mobilizing parents to improve their knowledge and practice in managing child's pain at home. ...
