Abstract
Weaning begins from the moment supplementary food is started and continues until the child is taken off the breast completely. Breast milk alone is not able to provide a sufficient amount of all the nutrients needed to maintain growth after 6 months. The complementary food includes usually cow’s milk, fruit juice, soft cooked rice, pap and vegetables. Weaning food should be carefully chosen to complement the nutritional needs of the baby, promote appropriate nutrient intake and maintain growth. This study assessed the knowledge and weaning practices of mothers/caregivers at Ateba community health center. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving mothers/ caregivers attended to by the primary health care (PHC) workers at a large community Health center in Okene Local government. Respondents were systematically selected until a desired sample size of 200 is achieved. A face to face questionnaire was used to collect data on demography, knowledge and response to weaning practices from the participants. The data collected were analyzed with SPSS version 25 by using descriptive statistics involving frequency count, percentages and graph. The main outcome measures were level of weaning knowledge and common weaning food and practices. The finding reveals that 52.5% have the highest proportion of age that fall between 26 and 35 years. The analysis also implies that 100% of the mothers were married and the majority of the respondent are Ebira's 87.5%. The study found that mothers in the sample were well informed and have good knowledge about weaning (100%). Also, this study also showed that slightly above average 53.3% uses cup and spoon for their weaning practices while about 11.5% of the sample still force feed their child due to food rejection and virtually all the respondent uses Pap& soya milk (Eko) in weaning their babies....
