Abstract
This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in three secondary schools in Ika South L.G.A of Delta State. Two hundred and ten respondents were selected from the schools using randomization sampling technique. A semi-structures interviewer administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Data entry was carried out using SPSS version 15. Two hundred of the respondents (98.0%) had knowledge of cigarette smoking of which television was their major (47.5%) of information. Other sources of information include radio (39.5%) and school (13.0%). Majority ( 53.0%) of the respondents correctly defined cigarettes. Forty–four percent had close contact with smokers and nearly half (47.0%) of the respondents believed cigarette smoking has the effect of cough mouth dour, cancer, teeth stain and black lips. Thirty–one percent of the respondents believed it also causes mental problems, premature birth (21.5%), mass-carriage (13.5%) and (77.0%) believed it causes infertility in women. Majority (93.5%) of the respondents do not smoke only 6.5% of the respondents do smoke and 29.5% of the respondents were initiated by bad gangs,13.0% by peer group and only 66.5% believed cigarette smoking can affect non-smokers. Promotion of health education on the consequences of smoking cigarettes targeted at the vulnerable age group, especially in parties where they are frequently influenced to smoke will be a major factor in influencing smoking cessation. Peer education in schools emphasizing knowledge of the health implications of smoking as well as early diagnosis of smoking related health problems will go a long way in encouraging smoking cessation. ...
