Abstract
Attitude and practice of force-feeding infant among nursing mothers in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The aim of the study is to assess the attitude and practice of force-feeding infants among nursing mothers and also to help enhance mothers' knowledge about complications of force-feeding practice. Cross-sectional descriptive research design was used and convenience non-probability sampling technique was utilized to select the subject needed, the main instrument for data collection was a well-structured questionnaire administered to 100 respondents (mothers). Results from the study revealed that 55% of the mothers do force-feed their children, while 45% don’t and 52.3% of the mothers who force-feed their children do it only once in a while, 30.8% do it very often, while 16.9% do it often. Also, 56% of the respondents use cups to feed their children, 26% use bottles, while 18% use other means. In conclusion, there is a need for nurses and even midwives to be deliberate in educating nursing mothers about the dangers of force-feeding, infant feeding, the way and patterns that could be adopted for a person and the reason for it. This study recommended that Nurses should assist intending nursing mothers to get familiar with different infant feeding patterns that may be available and healthy for infant, the reason for each of them and how or when to implement them, the consequences and dangers of force-feeding should be comprehensively explained to mothers and advice should be given on the need to translate knowledge into practice.
