Abstract
Hospitalization can be an intimidating and stressful experience for children because they are unaccustomed to the environment and medical procedures and ignorant of the reasons for hospitalization. This research was designed to examine the attitude and practice of Atraumatic care among nurses working in paediatric units of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Relevant literature was reviewed and Health Promotion Model was used to review the topic theoretically. A descriptive non-experimental research design was used to evaluate the research problem a sample size of 72 respondents was used. Data was collected using self-structured questionnaire, analyzed using SPSS and presented using charts and tables which showed that the nurses (96.3%) in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital have positive perception towards atraumatic care. The study also revealed that the attitude of nurses in paediatric units, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital towards atraumatic care include: it is often too stressful for paediatric nurses strive to overcome the problems that arise as a result of child hospitalization, nurses do not have ample of time on duty to engage in act of playing with hospitalized children in order to reduce the impact of hospitalization, nursing professionals consider text-to-speech (TTS) as a tool that facilitates care, improves communication and reduces traumas and fears related to the hospitalization, improving the care provided to hospitalized children and the TTS technique is not realistic in this hospital setting. Recommendations include training programme on atraumatic care that should be held regularly for all medical staff especially those working in paediatric units and training of health care professionals, especially those working in paediatric units should include ways to improve knowledge about atraumatic care.
