Abstract
Post-operative pain (POP) is a form of acute pain following surgical trauma as a result of the inflammatory reaction and initiation of afferent neurological barriers. The pain is felt in response to the inflammatory process resulting from tissue injury during surgical procedures like skin incision, tissue dissection, manipulation and traction. Unless adequately managed postoperative pain management can be complicated to delayed ambulation, reduced patient satisfaction and increased incidence of pulmonary complications. The study was carried out to assess the practice of postoperative pain management among healthcare personnel in paediatric surgical unit UITH. A non-experimental descriptive study was used while convenient non-probability sampling technique was used to assess the practice of postoperative pain management among healthcare personnel in paediatric surgical unit UITH. A self-structured questionnaire which is valid and reliable, sample size of twenty-two (22) was arrived from fourteen (14) nurses and eight (8) doctors. All data were analyzed using frequency and percentage and presented in the table. Chi-square statistic with a 0.05 level of significance was used in testing the developed hypothesis. The finding shows that the majority of nurses and doctors have good knowledge of postoperative pain management which promotes the practice. All hypotheses tested showed that there is no significant relationship between the nurses' and doctors' level of education, child’s age and practice of postoperative pain management as all the tabulated values were greater that the calculated value. The researcher concluded and recommends that healthcare personnel should have adequate knowledge, a positive attitude and good skills for effective postoperative pain management and also nurses working in the surgical unit should have an adequate level of knowledge regarding different treatment modalities and their techniques of administration.
