Abstract
This descriptive study was carried out in order to determine the prevalence of maternal mortality at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital between January 2019 to December 2021. Maternal mortality refers to any loss of a woman's life resulting from pregnancy complications. The researcher described the background of the study, statement of the problem and there was in-depth description of literature review and theoretical review. Qualitative research design was adopted and the research setting was obstetrics and gynecology ward University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The instrument of data collection was a checklist comprising the age, parity, occupation and causes. The ethical approval was collected from the ethical review committee. Data analysis was done using percentage, tables, and charts.  From my findings, 210 patients died within the above-mentioned period. It was ascertained that most of them were multiparous about (65%). It was also discovered that infection and Postpartum hemorrhage were the major causes of their deaths. Also discovered that most of them were between the age group of (35years and above. Based on the findings the following are the recommendations made by the researcher: There should be an improvement in the socioeconomic status of the community, health care should be free for all pregnant women, non-governmental organizations should expand their services in rural areas to upgrade reproductive health status and women should be empowered so that they can take care of themselves.
