Abstract
Discharge Against Medical Advice (DAMA) remains one of the most common issues worldwide in healthcare that leads to significant morbidity, mortality, burden on the healthcare system, and high healthcare costs in Sub-Saharan African despite several efforts in prevention and management. The incidence of DAMA may vary from one location to another and from one age to another. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of discharge against medical advice among patients admitted to medical wards in the University of Ilorin Teaching hospital, Ilorin, Kwara state. Data were collected from records of the patient that DAMA in medical wards between June 2021 - June 2022. A checklist consisting of the age, gender, occupation was used to gather information from the records departments. The research design adopted for this study is non-experimental retrospective study. The incidence rate of DAMA cut across all ages= 41 and is high in patients between the ages of 18-40 years. The incidence of DAMA was higher in male than in female and is also high in patients that are self-employed compared to other groups of occupations. The outcome of this study may serve as a guide to correctly and effectively find interventions in the prevention of DAMA rates in hospitals, so as to reduce morbidity and mortality in future. ...
