Abstract
Diabetes is one of the most important challenges to health services due to the higher costs, higher mortality and morbidity rate Increasing patients’ knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is directly proportional to adequate adherence to treatment regimen and declining complications associated with DM. This study is tailored to assess the knowledge of patients on the adherence to the management of diabetes mellitus at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. The study employed a quantitative research design. Target population is patients in male and female medical wards and outpatient departments at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, respondents were selected using a purposive sampling technique at the time of data collection. A self-structured questionnaire was used as a method of data collection and a total of 48 questionnaires were distributed and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. Finding from the analysis shows that the majority of 29(61.7%) respondents have been given adequate information about diabetes management while 18(38.3%) have not.  Also, this study shows that 38(80.9%) of the total respondent follow strictly their dietary regimen every day while 8(17.0%) sometimes do and 1(2.1%) do not at all. This study recommends that patients should be enlightened on the implications of non-adherence to treatment on their health and also the Government should provide a diabetes education program to increase patients' knowledge on adherence to diabetes management. ...
