Abstract
This research work was conducted to evaluate the impact of overcrowding in the emergency department on patient outcomes in the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Ilorin. It informed the health officers on the understanding of nurses regarding overcrowding. Among the objectives was to assess the trigger of overcrowding in the emergency department of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Ilorin and know the impact of overcrowding on patient outcomes in the emergency department of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Ilorin. Furthermore, to identify the precautions needed to avoid overcrowding in the emergency department of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Ilorin. Many medical and allied literatures were reviewed to develop more facts for the project work. This research use descriptive survey to sample nurses in the study area. Questionnaire is the instrument used to gather and analyze the data, 90 questionnaires were distributed out of which 84 were retrieved. In conclusion, recommendations were made that government should implement policies that will encourage better working conditions for emergency nurses and doctors, the government should equip health facilities with adequate healthcare delivery system and standard medical equipment, the hospital management should make use of standardized diagnostic pathways to tackle the delay in laboratory results. And lastly, nurses should always address every medical case base on the triage level. ...
